Historical Significance

Ancient trade routes connected Pindari and Milam Valleys to Tibet for centuries. The first known exploration of the Pindari Glacier was by GW Traill, the Deputy Commissioner of Kumaon, in 1830. Subsequent expeditions by notable explorers include Schlagintweits (1850), Ruttledge (1926), and the Japanese Mt. Nanda Kot Expedition team (1936).

Trekking Itinerary

Day 1: Loharkhet to Khati via Kharkiya

  • Altitude: 5,502 ft to 7,355 ft
  • Time: 3-hour Jeep drive, 1-hour trek
  • Distance: 3-4 km
  • Highlights: The trek starts with a Jeep ride from Loharkhet to Kharkiya, followed by a scenic trek to Khati Village through forests and mountain ridges.

Day 2: Khati to Dwali

  • Altitude: 7,355 ft to 8,566 ft
  • Time: 6-7 hours
  • Distance: 13 km
  • Highlights: The trail from Khati to Dwali has been affected by landslides, requiring trekkers to navigate through river-side moraines and broken paths.

Day 3: Dwali to Phurkiya

  • Altitude: 8,566 ft to 10,465 ft
  • Time: 3 hours
  • Distance: 5 km
  • Highlights: The trek ascends through rhododendron and oak forests with several stream crossings, offering spectacular views of Mt. Nandakhat and Nanda Devi East.

Day 4: Phurkiya to Zero Point and back to Phurkiya

  • Altitude: 10,465 ft to 12,300 ft
  • Time: 7 hours
  • Distance: 16 km
  • Highlights: The trek to Zero Point offers breathtaking views of Pindari Glacier, surrounded by majestic peaks like Changuch and Nandakot. Return to Phurkiya after reaching Zero Point.

Day 5: Phurkiya to Khati via Dwali

  • Altitude: 10,465 ft to 7,355 ft
  • Time: 7-8 hours
  • Distance: 18 km
  • Highlights: Retrace your steps back to Khati, navigating through the same landslide-prone areas.

Day 6: Khati to Kharkiya and drive to Kathgodam

  • Altitude: 7,355 ft to 7,395 ft
  • Time: 45-60 minutes trek
  • Distance: 4 km
  • Highlights: Trek from Khati to Kharkiya, followed by a Jeep drive to Kathgodam via Bageshwar.

Fitness Preparation

To prepare for the Pindari Glacier Trek, focus on cardiovascular endurance, strength, and flexibility. Regular jogging, squats, and stretching exercises are recommended. Ensure you can jog 4 km in 20 minutes, perform 3 sets of 8 squats each, and regularly stretch your hamstrings, quadriceps, hip flexors, lower back muscles, and shoulders.
